With the re­search areas Sensor Systems, RF Systems, Power Elec­tronics, System Inte­gra­tion and Embedded Systems, SAL is offering “key enabling tech­nolo­gies” for precisely these elec­tronic based systems and is laying the basis for smart prod­ucts and processes that create the foun­da­tions for things such as Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IOT), autonomous driving, cyber-phys­ical systems (CPS), AI, smart cities, smart energy and smart health.

Re­search is carried out at both model level and hard­ware level (compo­nents, assem­blies and devices with micro­elec­tronics and nano­elec­tronics) as well as the atten­dant embedded soft­ware level, in conjunc­tion with the holistic knowl­edge of compre­hen­sive system inte­gra­tion.

SENSOR SYSTEMS

Sensory organs of digital life
In the Sensor Systems re­search divi­sion, the team uses the basis of state-of-the-art tech­nolo­gies to work on different sensors that collect infor­ma­tion from the envi­ron­ment, inspired by all five senses. From the multi­tude of sensors, it is impor­tant to find the optimum combi­na­tion in order to use it, with the help of intel­li­gent algo­rithms and recent devel­op­ments, to expand the hetero­ge­neous inte­gra­tion of smart sensor systems for various appli­ca­tions.

RF SYSTEMS

Enable wire­less connec­tivity
In the RF Systems (RF – Radio Frequency) re­search divi­sion, every­thing is part of inno­v­a­tive solu­tions for wire­less commu­ni­ca­tion and radar tech­nolo­gies that cover the complete high-frequency spec­trum – from the MHz range to the very high GHz range. In the wire­less sensor networks area of re­search, there are strong ties with the Sensor Systems divi­sion.

In the Power Elec­tronics re­search divi­sion, new, more-powerful solu­tions are researched for all types of elec­tric energy trans­formers in all power classes, from the system and control design, through to switching struc­tures and to inte­gra­tion methods and construc­tion elements in new tech­nolo­gies.

SYSTEM INTE­GRA­TION

Combine diverse tech­nolo­gies
The re­search area System Inte­gra­tion Tech­nolo­gies deals with the hard­ware part of system inte­gra­tion. In order to connect the indi­vidual compo­nents of an elec­tronic system with each other, hetero­ge­neous inte­gra­tion tech­nolo­gies, exten­sive knowl­edge of elec­tro­magnet compat­i­bility testing and multi­phys­ical system simu­la­tion are required.

The research area Embedded Systems is inspired by the megatrend of things becoming more intelligent, connected, energy-efficient and sustainable. The growth of artificial intelligence beyond the cloud into the areas of edge computing and thus into embedded systems proves to be an important catalyst for this megatrend.
