Reputation

Maclean’s magazine’s annual university rankings is a leading source of information about universities in Canada. Mount Allison has been recognized by Maclean’s as the top primarily undergraduate university in Canada 19 times in the past 27 years — a record unmatched by any other university.

Student Life Network surveys thousands of students each year. As reported on their Campus Rankings website, Mount Allison’s reputation rates highest among undergraduate universities, and third overall behind only McGill and Queen’s.

Faculty

As a small university, Mount Allison students enjoy direct access to some of the finest faculty in the country. Compared to primarily undergraduate universities, Maclean’s ranks our faculty:

• first in the percentage of full-time instructional faculty with a PhD, or highest degree in their field
• first in national awards won
• first in medical/science grants awarded

Academics

A high percentage of Mount Allison’s graduating students move on to graduate programs or professional schools such as law and medicine.

• Maclean’s ranks Mount Allison third in the number of students who have won national academic awards.  
• To date, 54 Mount Allison students have become Rhodes Scholars — one of the best per capita records of any university in Canada. Valued at more than $100,000, the University of Oxford’s Rhodes Scholarship is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world.

Student experience and engagement

The annual National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) surveys students at many Canadian and U.S. universities.

The 2017 NSSE survey finds that Mount Allison students are more likely than students at other Canadian institutions to:

• work on research projects directly with professors
• be involved in on-campus events
• be encouraged to attend social and cultural activities
• interact with faculty members on activities other than coursework

Mount Allison students also report higher overall satisfaction than students at other schools. Over 80 per cent of first year students, and more than 90 per cent of senior students, rate their experience at Mount Allison as excellent or good.

In Maclean’s 2018, Mount Allison ranked well on a variety of student satisfaction measures including:

• third — extracurricular activities
• fourth —  residence living
• fourth — course instructors
• sixth — student life staff

The Globe and Mail’s annual Canadian University Report (October 2017) noted Mount Allison provides an above-average overall student experience.

Student supports

Maclean’s ranked Mount Allison fourth for spending on scholarships and bursaries. On average more than $2 million is awarded annually in scholarships, bursaries, and financial aid.

According to the 2017 NSSE survey, MtA students are more likely than students at other Canadian institutions to rate their campus as a supportive environment.
