Successful candidates will join the young, vibrant, and interdisciplinary FINATRAX Research Group, which builds bridges between business research and information systems engineering. The group conducts research on the application and the impact of technology on organisations in the private or public sector. Our team consists of international researchers with backgrounds in technology, law, management, economics, and other fields, united by a shared commitment to advancing sustainable technologies that benefit society. Your role

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the PhD program in Computer Science and Computer Engineering with a specialisation in Information Systems (IS) and they will contribute to an industry partnership with Banque Centrale du Luxembourg (BCL), focusing on cash infrastructures and financial services. In this context, the candidate will primarily, but not exclusively, use research methods grounded in geospatial economics and econometrics, as well as IS research. The person may also conduct surveys and/or interviews with relevant stakeholders. In addition, the candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the creation of networking opportunities, such as conferences and other events, and will disseminate results through scientific publications in well-ranked journals and conferences.

The individual will also conduct research in the context of Prof. Gilbert Fridgen's PayPal-FNR PEARL Research Grant and in collaboration with the FutureFinTech National Centre of Excellence in Research and Innovation. In particular, the successful candidate will be integrated into a larger research team on "Financial Technologies (FinTech)" and might collaborate with team members working on related projects. The successful candidate will thus be able to align the skills that they learn pursuing a doctorate with their personal goals and interests.

Your profile

  • Master's degree in economics, geoinformatics, (geographic) IS, economics of IS or related, with an interest in econometrics, geo-spatial analysis, and/or modelling
  • Foundational knowledge in at least one of the following programming languages/tools: STATA, R, Python, QGIS, ArcGIS
  • Interest in applying quantitative (and/or qualitative) research methods to address research and industry challenges
  • Willingness to work on the partner's premises in Luxembourg City for 1-2 days per week
  • A collaborative team player with an interest in socio-technical research and a desire to make a personal impact within our research group
  • The commitment to participate in the design and implementation of high-quality solutions that solve significant problems
  • Self-initiative, creativity, curiosity, flexibility, and enthusiasm to work
  • Operational Language Requirements: This position requires a high English-language proficiency (C1/C2, no certificate required) in both written and verbal communication

Academic Eligibility (Thesis):
