Robotics Technician (all genders) 40 hours/week, for 2 years

TU Wien is Austria's largest research and educational institution in the fields of technology and nat-ural sciences. At the Center for Digital Fabrication of Systems and Structures (E249-04), a position as a Robotics Technician (all genders) is available, expected to start in September 2026 (40 hours per week, limited to expected 2 years) in the research field of automation in concrete construction. The position may be extended subject to the availability of sufficient funding. The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering is currently establishing the Center for Digital Fabrication of Structures and Systems (CDFS) as a joint research platform involving several research units within the faculty. The aim of the center is to develop innovative digital fabrication technologies for the construction industry and to unlock their potential for a sustainable, resource-efficient, and circular construction economy. As a central research infrastructure, a state-of-the-art robotics laboratory (DFS Lab) is currently being established at the Science Center of TU Wien, equipped with advanced industrial robotics and comprehensive laboratory infrastructure. For the development and operation of this facility, we are seeking a dedicated Robotics Technician with solid knowledge in robotics and automation engineering. You will support the setup of the new research infrastructure and take responsibility for the programming, commissioning, operation, supervision, and maintenance of industrial robots as well as the associated hardware and software systems. In addition, you will collaborate with the researchers at the center to develop and optimize robot-assisted fabrication processes for innovative manufacturing methods. Through your technical expertise, you will contribute to a safe, reliable, and efficient laboratory operation.

Tasks:

  • Operation, programming, and optimization of industrial robots in the interdisciplinary Digital Fabrication Systems Laboratory (DFS Lab) at the Science Center of TU Wien
  • Development and optimization of new robotic processes (hardware, electronics, control software, sensors) for the automated manufacturing and disassembly of components and building systems (e.g., reinforced concrete components, biocomposite components made from wood fibers and lignin, assembly and disassembly of components and building elements, and collaborative robotics)
  • Collaboration with staff members of the center in the development of integrated manufacturing processes (reinforced 3D concrete printing, automated processing and deposition of biocomposite pastes followed by hot pressing, machining, and manipulation of components and building elements)
  • Management and maintenance of software versions for robots, PLC systems, and HMI systems
  • Ensuring compliance with quality standards and safety regulations during laboratory operations
  • Regular inspection and maintenance of robotic systems
  • Management and maintenance of the spare parts inventory
  • Fault diagnosis and troubleshooting
  • Training of personnel working at the center

Your profile:

  • HTL (Higher Technical College), university of applied sciences, or university degree in robotics, mechatronics, automation engineering, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering
  • Experience with industrial robots (e.g., ABB IRB)
  • Experience in robot programming is an advantage
  • Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git) is an advantage
  • Experience with relevant sensor and drive systems
  • Good command of German and English
  • Interest in working in an interdisciplinary research environment
  • Resilience and a resource-oriented mindset, willingness to take responsibility, initiative, and professionalism
  • Strong communication skills, empathy, willingness to resolve conflicts, ability to cooperate, and strong teamwork skills
