At the M-Group at KU Leuven Bruges Campus, we are driving innovation in intelligent mechatronic systems and electromagnetic risk management. Through our EMC laboratory within Flanders Make @ KU Leuven – MPro (FMEC), we work closely with industry to develop next-generation methodologies for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), system reliability and risk-based engineering.

Within the newly launched REMEDIS project — A Risk-Based Approach to EMC-Focused Design of Complex Mechatronic Systems — we are looking for an ambitious (junior) researcher to help shape the future of risk-based EMC engineering for complex systems.

Responsibilities

Modern mechatronic systems increasingly integrate power electronics, wireless communication, embedded software and complex system architectures. Traditional EMC engineering approaches are no longer sufficient to guarantee reliable and safe operation across all configurations and environments. REMEDIS addresses this challenge through reusable assurance methodologies, multidisciplinary engineering workflows and AI-supported decision support.

As a junior researcher, you will play a central scientific role in developing the Risk-Based EMC Assurance & Engineering Framework of the REMEDIS project. Your responsibilities include:
  • Develop innovative methodologies for risk-based EMC engineering and EMC assurance in complex mechatronic systems.
  • Design reusable EMC assurance case patterns and structured risk-analysis workflows.
  • Collaborate with industrial partners to validate the developed approaches on realistic engineering challenges.
  • Publish research results in leading international journals and conferences.

Profile

We are looking for a candidate with the following background:

  • A master degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Research experience or interest in electromagnetic compatibility, simulation-driven engineering and/or systems engineering.
  • Familiarity with electromagnetic measurements and simulations is a strong plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and scientific writing skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Offer

We offer:

  • A fully funded 2-year researcher position (extension towards a PhD possible depending on project evolution and funding).
  • The opportunity to contribute to pioneering interdisciplinary research at the intersection of EMC, AI and systems engineering.
  • Access to advanced EMC laboratories, simulation infrastructure and industrial demonstrator platforms.
  • A dynamic and internationally connected research environment with strong industrial involvement.
  • Opportunities to collaborate with leading companies in semiconductor, medical and mechatronic systems engineering.
  • Participation in international conferences, workshops and collaborative European research initiatives.
  • A competitive salary and a comprehensive package of university benefits.
About REMEDIS:
REMEDIS develops innovative methodologies to support risk-based EMC design and assurance for complex mechatronic systems. The project combines assurance case methodologies, AI-supported investigation workflows and risk-driven simulation strategies to reduce late-stage EMC failures and improve engineering efficiency across multiple industrial sectors.
