The Department of Medicine Huddinge (MedH) has a long tradition of clinic-related and translational research. Some of the department's focus areas within biomedicine are endocrinology, metabolism, immunology and infection. The department also has extensive educational assignments in the medical, nutrition, and biomedicine programs.

Description of the subject area

Biomedical research is defined as research in the borderland between basic science and clinical practice. Biomedical research at MedH mainly focuses on clinical materials.  A particularly exciting area is what is called immunometabolism, where we intend to further strengthen research at MedH.

The focus of immunometabolism is how energy metabolism and immunology interact, especially in disease but also in healthy individuals. A chronic, low-grade inflammation is clearly linked to obesity, aging, or other metabolic diseases and contributes strongly to disease and death. Research on the molecular mechanisms that link metabolic syndromes and inflammation is therefore of potential importance for several disease states and can potentially lead to new treatment strategies.

For the teaching position that is established here in biomedicine, we are looking for special expertise in immunometabolism. A senior lectureship with this focus will be unique at KI as it is combined with an extensive pedagogical assignment in the biomedical education.

Your mission

As a course coordinator and examiner, you will be responsible for several courses within the biomedicine programs at both undergraduate and graduate level. You will have overall responsibility for six different courses within the master’s Program in Biomedicine and, in close collaboration with the Program Board for the Biomedicine Programs at Karolinska Institutet, lead the pedagogical development work in the field of biomedicine.

You are expected to independently conduct your own research of high quality, which must be accommodated within the concept of biomedicine. Particular emphasis will be placed on research in immunometabolism. The role also includes supervision of students at several levels, including master's students, doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. In light of the focus on education, you will be an important link between education and research and contribute to securing research-related education. 

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical skills and very good scientific skills

Further eligibility requirements

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (2), pedagogical skills (3), leadership and collaboration skills (2).

It is furthermore meritorious that you have demonstrated

• Experience of research in the field of immunometabolism 
• Experience as a course director and examiner for courses at undergraduate and advanced level in biomedicine
• Experience of overall responsibility for pedagogical development work in biomedicine.
• Experience as a teacher representative in boards or councils with a focus on education.
• Experience of overall responsibility and pedagogical development in doctoral education.
