Join us at the Chalmers University of Technology, Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering and Department of Environmental and Energy Science to help advance knowledge in the system solution for transportation electrification.

Do you want to contribute to groundbreaking research in the system solution for transportation electrification considering energy systems? This is an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral position focused on innovative research in coupled transport-energy modeling and optimization. We are looking for a postdoc to join our team. Become part of our innovative group and contribute to exciting research within a collaborative and dynamic environment.

About us

The position will be hired in Urban Mobility Systems Research Area in Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and will be collaborating with Department of Environmental and Energy Science for interdisciplinary research.

The research within the Urban Mobility Systems Research Area is focused on advancing infrastructure, operation and management of emerging transport systems leveraging new technologies. The research area has been working on emerging research topics including transport electrification, shared mobility and connected automated transport, aiming to promote more sustainable, safer, more efficient, and equitable mobility for various users. The research area emphasizes electrification, digitalization, AI and big data for infrastructure-related and systematic research.

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering tackles contemporary and emerging challenges for the built and natural environment, ranging from resource utilisation, pollution and climate change to digitalisation and inequality. We combine expertise in architecture, civil engineering and related disciplines to build a better world.

The Department of Environmental and Energy Science aims to identify, analyse and describe the major environmental challenges of our time, with the aim of developing models, tools and competitive technological solutions to support the transition in sectors such as energy, transport and heavy industry. Within a scientifically excellent environment, we develop new technologies, build knowledge and educate the engineers of the future who can contribute to a sustainable society in the long term. A significant part of our research also takes a systems perspective, focusing on the interaction between technology, society and the environment in order to develop resilient solutions for the future.

About the research project

The rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs) is transforming road transport but also creates new challenges for both transport and energy systems. Large-scale EV charging can overload local power grids. Electric transport systems also depend heavily on electricity supply, meaning power outages or extreme weather events can directly disrupt mobility. In addition, charging infrastructure remains insufficient and often poorly planned. This project aims to develop a coordinated and scalable approach that couples transport and energy system modeling and decision-making with focus on transport system solutions. It will create a high-resolution simulation environment capturing dynamics and interactions among EV users, charging infrastructure, mobility demand, and power grid operations. On top of this environment, a deep-learning-based learning will be developed to enable decentralized and coordinated decisions on EV user charging decisions, infrastructure deployment, and energy system operation. Using the approaches, the project will analyze how synergistic charging of passenger vehicles and heavy-duty electric vehicles, combined with distributed renewable energy and battery storage, can improve system efficiency and resilience.
