  Your Role...

The University of Luxembourg is dedicated to strengthening its Ombuds Service through the addition of a second Ombuds.

If you are passionate about fostering fairness, good communication, conflict prevention and resolution, and ethical practices within a diverse academic community, we welcome your application for this important position.

The Ombuds plays a pivotal role in ensuring administrative fairness and equity for all stakeholders, including students, academic staff, and administration.

The Ombuds fulfils the role of an accessible, informal, independent, and confidential point of contact that both staff and students can turn to for the informal resolution of disputes within the university.

In order to ensure independence, the Ombuds reports directly to the Board of Governors of the University.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site Ombuds services to the full University community
  • Collaborate with the existing Ombuds to facilitate conflict prevention and informal resolution
  • Conduct confidential consultations and provide guidance to individuals seeking assistance
  • Advise in educating and informing stakeholders about University policies, procedures, and ethical standards
  • Promote open communication within the University community
  • Promote administrative fairness and equity
  • Participate in the analysis of systemic issues, trends, and data related to conflicts, and provide policy and procedure recommendations for improvement in order to prevent
  • Facilitate workshops and training programs on conflict resolution and ethical practices

Working in a team, the Ombuds will consult each other on complex and sensitive cases and provide each other with feedback and advice on case management, ensuring a high level of professionalism and impartiality. They will collaborate to provide continuity in case management.

  What we expect from you…

  • Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g. mediation, conflict studies, ethics, public policy, public administration, higher education administration, psychology…)
  • Substantial experience in conflict resolution (e.g. mediation, conflict coaching, restorative practices, non-violent communication, or a related field), preferably in a European university Ombuds office or similar environment
  • Experience in effectively handling complex cases, along with proficient management of related documentation and reporting
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Unbiased and impartial approach to dispute resolution
  • Knowledge of the International Ombuds Association (IOA) Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, coupled with extensive experience in Ombuds practices within the distinctive landscape of European higher education and research
  • Familiarity with relevant national and European legal and regulatory frameworks
  • Knowledge of University policies, procedures, and ethical standards
  • Required Proficiency in English and German, French being an asset
