Post-Doctoral position in the field of Single molecule research (Ribosomal Translation)

Single ribosomes at work – Postdoc research position

Research
The project focuses on single molecule motor protein studies with high-resolution optical-force-spectroscopy laser tweezers (in collaboration with FZ Jülich, GER). The molecular motor of interest is the ribosome. We follow synthesis by single ribosomes in real-time and are interested in its interaction with small molecules and protein folding at single molecule level. Our work published in PNAS in May 2017 serves as a starting point. Wruck, F., Katranidis, A., Nierhaus, K.H., Büldt, G., Hegner, M. (2017) Translation and folding of single proteins in real-time Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 114 (22) E4399-E4407; doi:10.1073/pnas.1617873114 (see publications for download)

Job description
A postdoctoral position is available immediately in the School of Physics / Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN).
The interdisciplinary project is funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI, initially for two years). Appointment on salary SFI range will be made commensurate with qualification and experience.

Location
Trinity College Dublin - Located in a beautiful campus in the heart of Dublin’s city centre, Trinity is Ireland’s highest ranked university and one of the world’s top 100. It is home to 17,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students across all the major disciplines in the arts and humanities, and in business, law, engineering, science, and health sciences. www.tcd.ie

Requirements
The candidate must have a PhD in Biology or Physics possibly with preference in Biophysics applications of single molecule techniques. He/she is expected to be highly motivated, focused - with attention to detail, independent, a ‘team player’ and have a strong background in interdisciplinary biophysical experimental techniques. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and carrying out the experiments and for analysing the data. It is expected that he/she will acquire an in-depth knowledge of the background literature, contribute to the interpretation of the biophysical experiments on the basis of detailed analysis, and integrate the results with those of ongoing molecular biology and biochemistry experiments in the field. Knowledge in molecular-biological preparation of molecules, surface functionalization techniques and optics of laser tweezers is advantageous. Excellent verbal, written (publication (-s) in the field of single molecule research is a big plus), and listening skills including demonstrated ability to work well with other people as part of a scientific collaboration and excellent organisational and administrative skills are required.

Applications should include a cover letter with a statement of motivation and an outlook of the candidates career planning, a curriculum vitae with a list of publications and the names and contact information of at least three referees. Applications/enquiries should be sent to Martin Hegner

If you are interested, please send your CV, application letter and the name of three referees to:
