The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.

The reseach group

Our group is focused on studying the role of mitochondria and energy metabolism in neurodegeneration, particularly in Alzheimer´s disease, with important contributions in the field. Our recent projects are focused on alterations of mitochondrial dynamics, such as mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum contacts, mitochondrial fission, movement and transfer, and their role for neuron-glia communication. We use both in vitro and ex vivo systems with advanced imaging and bioenergetic assays to address our research questions. We consist in a group of seven people with different academic levels and backgrounds, educationally and culturally, and we have ongoing national and international research collaborations.

Duties

This project aims to create a spatial-resolved proteomic and imaging map of mitochondria in astrocytes from Alzheimer´s disease models, with a focus on mitochondrial membranes dynamics. Our ambition is to find new regulators of mitochondrial dynamics with relevance to neurodegeneration processes. 2-D and 3-D cocultures, proteomics, confocal and super-resolution microscopy and high-resolution respirometry are among the methods you will use in the lab. You are expected to be part of the group and to work and develop in accordance with the common group goals and research interests.

Entry requirements

We are seeking a highly motivated and team-oriented postdoctoral researcher for a two year scholarship with a background in neuroscience and with interest in mitochondrial biology. The successful candidate must have documented experience in high-resolution fluorescence imaging and training in imaging analysis softwares such as ImageJ and Imaris. It is highly advantageous if you have experience in proteomic analysis. Expertise in primary cell culture, mice manipulation and virus injections are merits.

We value enthusiasm and commitment towards research, and the successful candidate should be able to work independently performing their own experiments and analyses. You are also expected to provide support in experimental design and experimentation to other members of the group. Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: We are located in BioClinicum, KI-Campus Solna.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
