The Opportunity

The Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. The successful candidate will primarily be involved in a team-based approach for the continued development and teaching of courses for the interdisciplinary undergraduate Quantitative Biosciences and Engineering (QBE) Program. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach a variety of core undergraduate biology courses (including labs) such as introductory biology 1 (molecules, cells, genetics), introductory biology 2 (evolution, ecology, organismal biology), cell biology, and genetics. Depending on experience and teaching needs of the program, there will be the opportunity to develop independent lecture and lab courses in the candidates’ areas of expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver lecture and lab courses to undergraduate students in traditional face-to-face formats using evidence-based teaching and course design practices.
  • Mentor and advise undergraduate students and graduate student teaching assistants.
  • Collaborate across campus to promote the continued growth of the biological sciences.
  • Contribute both institutionally and professionally through service.
  • Cultivate and promote an inclusive and diverse Mines community through recruiting, mentorship, and service.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in Biology, Quantitative Biology, Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioinformatics, or a closely-related field required by time of appointment.
  • Teaching experience in introductory biology courses with emphasis on experiential based lab learning.
  • Commitment to excellence in and evidence of biology teaching and curriculum development at the undergraduate level especially with regards to 21st century biology curriculum development and instruction.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated use of evidence-based course design and instructional practices including efficacy using modern educational technology platforms. 
  • Effective communication among co-workers, students, administration, and other constituents. 
  • The potential to become an excellent instructor, mentor and scholar.
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of college-level teaching experience as instructor-of-record or equivalent graduate or postdoctoral training in evidence-based teaching methods.
  • Experience managing laboratory sections including graduate student teaching assistant training, coordinating across multiple sections and instructors, and basic lab course upkeep (ordering, cleaning, organizing, etc.).
  • Ability to teach in one or more of the following fields: anatomy and physiology, neuroscience, immunology, and psychology.
  • Experience or interest in biology education research and/or the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Pay Rate

Mines is offering an academic year salary of $53,560 - $94,800. 

Mines takes into consideration a combination of internal equity in the home department and the candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
