Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, the Department of Design and the Department of Media invite applications for the position of
Lecturer in Design Communication
Following the launch of an international bachelor programme in Design in 2019, the Aalto School of Arts, Design and Architecture is inviting applications for a Lectureship position in Design Communication. Following the goal set for the programme, we are searching for a lecturer to embrace and explore the new realms of design work together with a committed community of teachers and students. In particular, we are searching for a lecturer with a background in design who can help strengthen our students’ design and reasoning skills. As a teacher in the programme, the lecturer will nurture knowledge-building within experimental, creative design processes, advance sustainability, research-based reasoning and argumentation, and further the student’s understanding of the value of situated design knowledge more generally.
The lecturer position is shared between the Department of Design and the Department of Media. The staff at the Department of Design and the Department of Media consists of leading academics and practitioners who have active research and professional careers. You will be working in a team of professors and lecturers along with hourly teachers, administrative staff and other teaching and research staff of the departments.
The position will be filled as soon as possible, according to a fixed-term agreement at any level of the Aalto University Lecturer Career System. The initial position is fixed-term with the possibility of advancement to a permanent position, based on success in the duties and criteria set for the candidate. The position requires residency in Finland.
For information on the Lecturer Track at Aalto University, please see: https://www.aalto.fi/en/research-art/lecturer-career-system
The lecturer will work as a core member of the teaching team for the English-medium bachelor programme in Design, taking part in delivering courses, tutoring students and in curriculum development. The lecturer will also participate in supervising theses and take part in student admissions for the programme when needed.
Following the ethos of the programme, the lecturer should be interested to embrace both theory and practice in engagements with students, to blur the boarders between digital and physical design work and engage with both societal and industry partners in projects. Co-teaching and co-learning are important parts of the curriculum. The lecturer should therefore thrive from working collaboratively with other teachers in planning and delivering courses and projects. We embrace a variety of teaching and learning formats in the programme and offer an opportunity to develop new ideas with the other teachers. As a new programme, we also provide opportunities for a lecturer that is interested in curriculum development beyond individual courses.
Apart from taking an active role in the development of our English-medium bachelor programme, the lecturer is expected to take part in delivering courses and in supervising students in other programmes and doing research and/or pursuing professional design engagements in relation to the expertise areas of the lecturer. As a component of this work, the lecturer is expected to take part in utilizing Aalto University facilities and to develop collaboration with other programmes, Aalto schools as well as societal and industry partners.
The position requires in-depth expertise about design and its varied forms and associated processes, as well as, understanding of design communication (promotion) and related knowledge making. We expect prior experience in articulating the value and functioning of design to others.
The lecturer is required to have proven track-record in research, demonstrated through research projects and/or publications. A doctoral degree in design or a related field is desirable. Practical design skills – demonstrated through either a higher degree in design and/or professional experience from design practice – is seen as an advantage.
The lecturer shall have good oral and written communication skills for teaching and supervising students in English. We expect prior experience in working collaboratively and inclusively with an international cohort of students. Previously completed pedagogical studies are seen as an advantage. Prior experience in course and program development and administration are also seen as beneficial.
Proficiency in Finnish and/or Swedish is beneficial but is not a requirement for the position.
